Early Orthodontic Treatment for Kids

The best time to catch orthodontic problems is before they become bigger ones. At Edge Orthodontics, we recommend that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. At this stage, Dr. Young can identify issues with jaw development and tooth alignment early and take action while the jaw is still growing.

Early treatment does not mean every child will need braces right away. In many cases, the assessment simply confirms that everything is on track. But for children who do show signs of concern, acting early can mean shorter, simpler treatment later on.

What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?

Phase 1 treatment, sometimes called early interceptive treatment, is orthodontic care that happens before all the permanent teeth have come in. It typically takes place between ages seven and ten.

The goal is not to fully straighten the teeth at this stage. The goal is to guide jaw growth, create enough space for incoming permanent teeth, and correct bite problems that will only get harder to fix as a child gets older.

Common Phase 1 treatments include expanders to widen the upper jaw, partial braces on specific teeth, and retainer-style appliances worn at night. Treatment length varies but often runs six to twelve months, followed by a rest period before Phase 2 treatment begins in the teen years.

Signs Parents Should Watch For

You do not need to wait for your child’s dentist to refer you. Some signs that an early orthodontic evaluation makes sense include:

Crowding or spacing concerns. Baby teeth that are very crowded or very spread out can signal that there will not be enough room for permanent teeth to come in straight.

Crossbite. If the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth on one or both sides when your child bites down, this is worth addressing early. Crossbites can affect jaw development and facial symmetry.

Underbite or overbite. An underbite, where the lower jaw sits forward of the upper jaw, is easiest to correct while the jaw is still growing. A significant overbite can also be improved with early treatment.

Mouth breathing. Children who habitually breathe through their mouth may be dealing with a narrow airway or palate. An orthodontic evaluation can determine whether a palate expander could help.

Thumb or finger sucking after age five. Extended thumb sucking can push the front teeth forward and affect the development of the upper jaw. If the habit continues past age five or six, it is worth bringing up at an evaluation.

Early or late loss of baby teeth. Losing baby teeth much earlier or later than expected can affect how and where permanent teeth erupt.

If you have noticed any of these signs, contact us to schedule an evaluation. There is no referral required.

What Happens at a First Consultation

The first visit to Edge Orthodontics is a straightforward, no-pressure appointment. Here is what to expect:

Dr. Young will review your child’s teeth, jaw, and bite. We use our iTero digital scanner to take precise 3D images of the teeth and gums, which is comfortable and takes only a few minutes. There are no messy impression materials.

After the scan, we discuss our findings with you clearly. If early treatment is recommended, we explain exactly what it involves, how long it will take, and what it will cost. If your child does not need treatment yet, we let you know when to come back for a monitoring check.

We work hard to make kids feel comfortable from the moment they walk in. Our team takes time to explain what is happening at every step so children feel informed and at ease, not anxious.
